End of School Year Blues (Or Pinks)

Inspiration Canvas Today is the last day of school for my big guy!  First grade is over.  He had a an awesome teacher this year. I really wish I could clone her and make a new second grade teacher for him.  He loves her and wanted to give her a gift.  So, we made her a canvas.  For inspiration,  we went to Pinterest  and Google . We found a lot of inspiration but ultimately agreed that we liked a canvas we found on  Lines, Dots and Curls By Katie .  He told me blue wouldn't work because his teacher's favorite color is pink.  Lucky for him, I already had pink and black acrylic paint (Apple Barrel Gloss in Pure Pink 20346 and Black 20504 from Wal-mart ) and an 8" x 10" canvas I purchased a while ago for 50% off at Hobby Lobby . Our Canvas So, to get started, we opened Microsoft PowerPoint and laid out our plan.  He wanted to help paint so we taped off the top section and the bottom lines.  He painted the pink base at the top and the pink lines at the bottom

I'm Sewing?!

Well, my hubby bought me a sewing machine for Mother's Day.  I had been talking about getting one for a while.  So, I am very pleased that he bought me a Brother LS-590 . I hadn't sewn since baby doll  clothes at my grandma's house so I was super nervous about getting started again. I knew I needed to make a crib skirt but I didn't want to jump into something over my head. So, off to Google I went.  Typed in easy bed skirt and a list of no-sew and easy sewing projects popped up.  I read through a few and found a no-fail crib skirt tutorial  by Liz at It's Great To Be Home.  It seemed like a winner for me.  I used it as a guide to make my own skirt. I used: 2 yards of fabric ( M'Liss Via Land Sea and Air Alphabet Cotton Fabric at Hancock Fabrics ) 1 package of Velcro Scissors Thread Cutting Board Iron Sewing Machine My fabric was 44 inches wide.  I cut it into 3 17" height strips.  I folded a  1" hem at the top and bottom of each strip.

An Oldie but Goodie

This is a project from a few months ago but I thought I'd share it.   My hubby bought me a new tablet - a Nexus 7 .  I love it.  I'm a very clumsy person when it comes to electronics.  Phones and tablets seem to always find a way from my hand to the floor or ground. So, I started looking for a case.  I saw some I liked but didn't want to pay the tag for them so I turned my attention to Pinterest and Etsy for ideas.  While searching for DIY projects, I ran across a tutorial on one of my fave blogs,  Practically Functional .  I thought, "It can't be too hard, give it a try."  I sat down and, after a little trial and error (about 1 hour), I ended up with a pretty cute tablet case.   I used some left over vinyl we had from reupholstering a chair for the outside.  The ribbon, inner lining, and elastic were from  Wal-mart  (total less than $10). I get lots of compliments on the case.  What do you think?

Newbie

I'm a newbie but I thought I'd keep a log of all the fun stuff I've been doing for the arrival of my little guy (in 4 weeks).  I have enjoyed all the fun projects so much that I decided I would love to keep doing them in my spare time (whatever that is).  So this mom to soon to be 2, full time worker, and wife is going to try her hand at blogging and DIY.  Let's see how this goes. Stick with me.  It's going to be a bumpy ride.
